Matanzas later grew into a significant port city as the hub of Cuba’s sugar economy in the 18th and 19th centuries. Thus the city also became a significant slave port in Cuba. Its location on the northern coast made it an ideal entry point for the Transatlantic Slave Trade. By the late 18th century, Matanzas had become one of the most active ports in the Caribbean for human trafficking, with thousands of enslaved people arriving annually to work the sugar plantations. When the Transatlantic Slave Trade was banned, it then became a major port for Chinese slaves. Making the people of Matanzas a unique mix of ethnicities. The large enslaved population in Matanzas frequently bore acts of resistance, revolts and escapes including The Great African Slave Revolt of 1825. The enslaved population, largely composed of newly imported Africans, sought to overthrow the Spanish slave masters and escape bondage. The rebellion was well-organized, involved coordinated attacks on plantations and an attempt to seize control of the territory. The Spanish responded with extreme violence, executing many of the leaders and implementing stricter control measures to prevent future uprisings. However, it didn’t help and there continued to be acts of resistance. The Great African Slave Revolt of 1825 remains one of the most significant acts of uprising and directly influenced the abolition of African slavery in Cuba in 1886.
