Your Cuba itinerary
Did You Know?
Cuba is petitioning to include cassava, an endemic food to Cuba, for UN World Heritage status.
Day 1
Habana y la Historia
Land in La Habana and be whisked away to your 5 course meal! Your first lesson is CUBAN HISTORY THROUGH FOOD. Every dish is specifically selected to tell the story of Cuba and is explained by a museologist.
Next is FOOD ECONOMICS. Head into a Cuban home and learn the reality of how food gets to your table. Under U.S. sanctions and the Communist system, food is a touchy subject as it is in limited supply on the island. Get first-hand experience with your next professor.
Your welcome dinner is at Havana’s hottest restaurant with Havana’s most beautiful cocktails (and bartenders).
Day 2
Marine Conservation + Classic Cars
Wake up and get ready to swim because we’re headed to a lesson in MARINE CONSERVATION! Our professor, who studies marine insects which indicate the health of the ocean, will lead our class on the various Cuban conservation programs. Our FIRST DIVE follows right after this lesson with a short break and some adjustments to your gear before heading back in for your SECOND DIVE. Head back into the beach to enjoy a delicious seafood lunch before returning to the city.
Finally, we’re ending a long day with a SUNSET CLASSIC CAR ride complete with photos to take home as souvenirs!
Did you know?
Fidel Castro was a scuba diver! The CIA allegedly attempted to assassinate him by planting explosives in sea shells.
Did you know?
The botched invasion of the Bay of Pigs was conducted by Cuban exiles who were trained by the CIA.
Day 3
Playa Larga
Today we are headed to Cuba’s infamous dive spot. The Bay of Pigs is mostly known as the site of a failed US invasion. However, it should be known for its sparkling blue waters that hold a host of wildlife down below. Your first stop is the BAY OF PIGS MUSEUM.
Enjoy an amazing lobster lunch along the beach, before spending the afternoon checking out the reef and shipwrecks in your THIRD & FOURTH DIVES of the trip.
What other Reroot travelers are saying:
Did You Know?
Within the Zapata Swamp are over 900 autochthonous plant species, 175 species of birds, 31 species of reptiles and over 1000 species of invertebrates.
Day 4
Swamps of Zapata
Our final day together will have a nature walk through the swamps of Zapata where you’ll see a totally different kind of wildlife with our professor who specializes in FLORA, FAUNA, and BIRDS OF CUBA! If you get lucky, you might spot a flamingo!
After lunch we head into the waters of Matanzas for our FIFTH DIVE before returning for an extra special NIGHT DIVE after dinner.

Meet Thao!
Born and raised in New Orleans, I’m a Vietnamese-American who loves durian and diving. I am a PADI advanced open-water diver and an SSI rescue-certified diver.
I’ve logged 90 dives in 9 different countries. Most of my diving has been in the Coral Triangle in Southeast Asia. But now, I want to have a different adventure experience diving in the Caribbean waters. I also have two master’s degrees from the University of Wyoming (1) Political Science and (2) Environment and Natural Resources.
My research topic focused on local perspectives of marine protected areas in two national parks in Indonesia. Similar to my thesis, you’ll be hearing directly from Cubans. You’ll learn about how locals feel about conservation and how they manage their marine protected areas.
You’ll also experience how their conservation policies and efforts have kept their coral reefs pristine despite political and economic exclusion.
