Tradition, Resistance, and Renewal in Seoul

Day 1

Arrival in Seoul

Welcome Dinner & Orientation

Arrive in vibrant Seoul and travel by airport bus to your hotel in Myeongdong, one of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods. Meet your fellow travelers over a welcome dinner and guided orientation, where we introduce South Korean culture, protocol, key historical context, and the themes that will shape your educational journey through Korea.

Day 2

Korean Philosophy and Harmony with Nature at the Palace

Step into history during an immersive introduction to traditional Korean philosophy set within a royal palace. Dressed in carefully selected hanbok, required for palace entry, you will enjoy the ritual of choosing your attire before being guided through the palace grounds. A private photographer will capture the experience against this majestic backdrop.

Rooted in an understanding of Koreans as an Indigenous people with lifeways deeply connected to nature, this session explores Confucian thought, harmony between heaven and earth, and reverence for the natural world. These principles reveal the balance and wisdom that continue to shape Korean art, architecture, social values, and daily life.

Day 3

Korean Shamanism & Temple Stay

Explore Korea’s living spiritual traditions through an intimate introduction to shamanism. Learn how shamans are called to their role and how this ancient practice has evolved from royal spiritual authority to its quieter presence in modern society. The experience culminates in a rare, private ritual performed exclusively for our group.

Escape the city and journey into Bukhansan National Park, where forested trails and granite peaks frame a deeply restorative landscape. Participate in a temple stay that introduces the foundations of Korean Buddhism while examining the historical role of monks and spiritual leaders during Japanese colonization. This immersive experience connects nature, resistance, and living spiritual practice.

Day 4

Seodaemun Prison History Hall and the Spirit of Resistance

Visit Seodaemun Prison History Hall, a powerful memorial to Korean independence activists imprisoned under Japanese rule. Through preserved cells and historical exhibits, explore the courage and resilience that fueled Korea’s resistance movement and continues to inform civic responsibility, justice, and national identity today.

Later, participate in daily meal experiences that reveal Korea’s story through food where each ingredient, preparation, and dish is intentionally chosen to reflect a moment in history, a cultural value, or a lesson in resilience. Through these shared meals, discover the Korean belief that food is medicine and see how balance, seasonality, and tradition sustained health and community across generations.

Day 5

Korean Seal-Carving & The Miracle of the Han River

Enjoy an intimate Korean seal-carving experience led by master artisans. Design and hand-carve a bespoke personal stamp, a timeless emblem historically used in fine art and formal correspondence. This refined cultural workshop blends heritage craftsmanship with meaningful personalization, offering an elegant keepsake that embodies your connection to Korea.

Examine the Miracle of the Han River, tracing South Korea’s rapid transformation from postwar poverty to global economic influence. Learn about the national gold collection movement, when citizens donated personal gold to help the country overcome financial crisis. The day unfolds in Mullae, where former industrial spaces now fuel Seoul’s creative resurgence.
