A Regenerative Travel Experience
Is it Ethical to Travel to Hawaiʻi?
Hawaiʻi is one of the most beautiful destinations in the world, but it also carries a complicated history. Colonialism, military occupation, and mass tourism have deeply impacted Native Hawaiian communities and ecosystems. With over 6 million tourists arriving every year, the islands are often depleted of their natural resources and cultural integrity. At Reroot, we recognize these realities and dared to ask the question: what if there was a more ethical and responsible way to travel to Hawaiʻi?
A Regenerative Approach to Travel in Hawaiʻi
Our Hawaiian Educational Tour is built on regeneration, not extraction. This isn’t mainstream tourism. Instead, you’ll be guided by Kānaka Maoli kumus (Native Hawaiian teachers) who share their expertise on topics like:
Climate change through a Hawaiian lens
‘Āina (land) preservation and sustainability
Native Hawaiian lifeways and cultural traditions
Every activity is designed to support Hawaiian communities and land:
All tours are led by Kānaka (Native Hawaiian) professors and cultural practitioners
Accommodations are unionized and staffed by local Hawaiians.
Every trip member participates in hands-on ‘āina (land) restoration projects
Proceeds help sponsor Native Hawaiian students.
This trip regenerates the community, the land, and you.
Why This Trip is Unique:
Dr. Kiona, founder of Reroot Travel, was born on O‘ahu and raised on Hawaiʻi Island. The experiences shared on this journey are rooted in long-standing relationships and trust. That trust is extended to you, but with the understanding that this trip is not for everyone. If you are not ready to travel responsibly and be of service to the Hawaiian people, we ask that you do not book.
For those who are ready to experience Hawaiʻi in an authentic, ethical, and life-changing way: Mahalo, and Welcome!
